At the Ava R-1 Board of Education meeting on Monday night, the maintenance department provided an update on their ongoing and upcoming projects aimed at keeping the district’s facilities in top condition. The department emphasized its commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness across all school buildings, ensuring that students and staff have a safe and welcoming environment. Custodial and maintenance staff continue to work diligently to meet the daily needs of the school while also addressing necessary repairs and improvements.
In their report, the maintenance team highlighted several recently completed projects. They have successfully replaced an old iron water line with a new Pex water line around the preschool, improving the reliability of the water system. The team has also serviced milk coolers and ice machines in both cafeterias to ensure they are operating efficiently. Additionally, ceiling tiles that had been damaged by water leaks were replaced after confirming that all leaks had been repaired.
To prepare for the extreme cold weather, staff worked on winterizing the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Building. They also began painting the new poles for the backstop at the softball field, a project aimed at enhancing both safety and aesthetics. The team continues to stay on top of routine maintenance, making sure all buildings and school grounds remain in good condition.
Looking ahead, several projects are planned to further improve the facilities. The district intends to pressure wash the brick buildings and apply sealant to protect them from weather damage. Handrails at the north end of the middle school are scheduled to be painted to maintain their appearance and prevent rusting. Additionally, the sump pump drain in the Performing Arts Center will be repaired to prevent water accumulation issues.
The district is also considering landscaping improvements by adding shrubs or trees to enhance the visual appeal of the school grounds. Another major project on the horizon is replacing a failing HVAC unit in the PAC Building to ensure proper climate control.
