Douglas/Ozark Counties RTA Met November 12, 2013

Marie Bristol, Ida Mae Huse, Caryl Feiler, Jane Elder, Ruth Evans, Betty Moore, Norma Stillings, and Julane Williams had lunch with senior citizens at Ava Community Center. Music during lunch was provided by Ava High School student, Casey Ritchie. RTA President Marie Bristol introduced Casey and greeted all those who were in attendance at lunch.

The retirees had their business meeting after lunch and approved the minutes and treasurer’s report after a motion and a second by Caryl Feiler and Jane Elder.

Different committee members made reports on the concerns of each committee. Julane Williams reported that membership renewals were slow this year. That might be due to the emphasis that had been made toward putting together the Region 10 meeting. She would have a more complete report next month.

The group made plans to buy Christmas gifts for public school retirees in nursing and residential facilities. Norma Stillings would get the names of former school personnel from the activity directors of Ava Place and Heart of the Ozarks. Ida Mae Huse would get the names of those in the Gainesville Healthcare Center. The group also discussed fun ways of raising funds to make a donation to the Meals on Wheels programs in Ava and Gainesville. They talked about having a “No Baked Goods” Sale.

The retirees were reminded to turn in reports of their community service volunteer time at the December meeting if possible.

Norma Stillings announced that Douglas County C.H.A.R.T. was sponsoring a Youth Mental Health, First Aid Training to be held December 6, 8am to 5pm, at the Ava R-1 Board of Education Room.

Ida Mae Huse, Legislative Chair, gave out some facts about Home Delivery Meals. The comparative annual costs of having meals delivered to the home of a Missouri Senior is a fraction of the cost of long-term nursing home care. Having adequate nutrition is often the key to whether a person can stay in their own home or not.

The 2013 scholarship award of $200 was made to Lauren Weyrauch, who is studying art education at Missouri State University.

Some memorial donations were made to the scholarship fund in memory of Lena Pierce who had been very active in the Douglas and Ozark Counties RTA and had worked hard on the scholarship committee many years.

The Ava High School Choir will present Christmas music at the December 10 RTA meeting.
