Coach Houk Gives Wrap-Up Of Bears’ Basketball Season

Nathan Houk, coach of the Ava Bears varsity basketball team, did a brief season wrap-up this week, emphasizing some of the highlights of the season.
The Bears finished the year with a 16-10 record, finishing first in the Mansfield Tournament. The Bears lost the third-place game in the Conway Tournament to Warsaw in triple overtime, went 1-2 in the Blue and Gold tournament (losing to Nixa, beating Buffalo, and losing to Morrisville), and finished 5-2 in the SCA.
In conference play, the Bears defeated Houston, Mtn. Grove, Salem, Thayer, and Willow Springs and lostto Mtn. View-Liberty and Cabool. Ava tied with Thayer for second place in conference.
The Bears lost to Blue Eye in the first round of the Class 3, District 11 tournament at Hollister.
Senior Austin Gastineau finished 5th in all time scoring at AHS with 1,157 points. He finished with 571 points for the 2012-13 season, which ranks him 6th in most points scored in a season.
Gastineau also broke the single game scoring record this season with 55 points.  He scored this in the triple overtime loss against Warsaw.
The record was previously held be Pete Leonard with 46 points.
