The Ava Lady Bears were back in action in 2012 Monday night, traveling to West Plains where they pulled off a big win against the Lady Zizzers.
With less than 3 seconds on the clock the Lady Bears in-bounded the ball and Jorie Garrett scored the winning bucket at the buzzer to give the Ava girls the 33-32 win.
Payton Lakey led Ava with 10 points and just as importantly, the Lady Bears held West Plains’ Andi Haney to 10 points.
Others scoring for Ava were Garrett 8, Abbie Lansdown 6, Bethany Horn 5 and Emily Sterling 4.
The Lady Bears will be at home for a rare Friday night contest this week, hosting Forsyth on Jan. 6.
Next week the Lady Bears will go to Cabool on Monday and will be at home Thursday, Jan. 12 against Liberty. Both Cabool and Liberty are conference games.
The Lady Bears won two games in the Lebanon Tournament last week, defeating Richland 67-48 in the opening round. That earned the Ava girls the good fortune to play top seed Bolivar which beat Ava 59-42. The Lady Bears then closed out the tournament with a 61-54 win over Crocker.
Lakey scored 25 points over Richland to lead three Ava players in double figures. Garrett had 16 points and Horn scored 10. Sterling added 9 points and Lansdown had 7 for Ava.
Jessica Hutton had 19 for Richland and Emily Case scored 15.
Lakey and Garrett combined for 26 points against Bolivar, with 14 and 12 points respectively. Lansdown and Horn added five each, Sterling had four points and Erica Croney had two points for Ava.
Bolivar led Ava 30-19 at the half.
Ava had four players in double figures against Crocker, and Lakey just missed a double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down nine rebounds.
Garrett had 13 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Lansdown had 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Horn scored 10 points and contributed with seven assists, as well as five rebounds.
Croney and Bailey Lee had two points each to round out the scoring for Ava. Sterling had five rebounds and two steals for Ava.
