Health Department highlights men’s mental health month

June is Men’s Health Month, and the Douglas County Health Department is reminding residents that health includes both physical and mental well being.
While men’s health often brings attention to fitness, annual checkups and heart health, mental health is an equally important part of overall wellness. Health officials encourage men to take small steps to care for their mental well being, whether that means talking with a trusted friend, reaching out to a loved one, making an appointment with a provider or asking for help during a difficult season.
The message is especially important for veterans, who continue to be affected by suicide at higher rates than the general adult population. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 6,398 veterans died by suicide in 2023, an average of about 17.5 veteran suicides per day. The VA also reported the suicide rate among male veterans increased to 37.8 per 100,000 in 2023.
The Douglas County Health Department encourages residents to help break the silence surrounding men’s mental health by checking in on friends, family members, neighbors and veterans who may be struggling.
