Bosom Buddies Breastfeeding Awareness Celebration From the Douglas County Health Department

The images showcased here are three of the black and white photos now on display at the Douglas County Health Department, in Ava.

The Douglas County Health Department’s WIC program held its annual Breastfeeding Awareness Month celebration on August 30th in conjunction with their breastfeeding support group Bosom Buddies. Breast Feeding Peer Counselors Annie Blakey and Elizabeth Hull planned a celebration to recognize and honor breastfeeding Moms and their families. The opening of the celebration was a grand unveiling of stunning professional canvas prints displayed along the Health Department walls. They are not just any canvas prints though; the models in these photographs are all local participants in the WIC program. Local Ava photographer Shelby Hall’s, Shelby Chante Photography, talent and skills helped each family, prenatal, breastfeeding mother, infant and child’s photograph just radiate with love.  Coordinating with their canvas is a testimony by each participant highlighting the positive impact of the WIC program on their family.

Immediately following the unveiling, attendees enjoyed decorating their own hanging wood signs. Many tiny baby feet were painted and placed, creating many laughs and lasting memories for years to come. UnitedHealth Care sponsored a colorful variety of snacks and bottled water for everyone.  Each family in attendance received a drawstring backpack goody bag filled with breastfeeding accessories and a variety of infant items. This celebration not only celebrated breastfeeding but truly embraced the vision of welcoming and supporting WIC participants and our community as a whole.
