Douglas/Ozark Counties Retired School Personnel Meeting October 1, 2016

The Douglas and Ozark Counties Retired School Personnel met for lunch at the Gainesville Community and Senior Center, Tuesday, October 11. Jane Elder called the meeting to order. Betty Moore asked a blessing upon the meeting and the food. The menu for that day was a choice of broccoli or chicken soup, salad bar, cookies, and milk.

Those attending the meeting were Jane Elder, Ida Mae Huse, Betty Moore, Laura J. Waters, Sue Robirds, Norma Stillings and the guest, Ruth Barrett.

Betty Moore moved to accept the proposed nominations for officers for the next year: Caryl Feiler, president, Jane Elder, vice president, Norma Stillings, secretary, and Julane Williams, treasurer.  Sue Robirds seconded the motion. There were no further nominations. The motion was approved with no opposition.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. This included a report on the 2016 MRTA Delegate Assembly. The minutes and the treasurer’s report were accepted as presented. Norma Stillings reminded the group that membership dues of $20 were now due for those who have not yet paid.

Ruth Barrett volunteers at the Ava Senior Center. She helps senior individuals with their income tax preparation and with choosing the best medical insurance coverage. She gave information and answered questions about the filing requirements, 2016 tax brackets, standard deduction amounts, personal exemptions, and other updates on both the IRS and state taxes. She also gave some information on making choices in Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, Medicare Advantage plans, HMO’s, drug plans, etc.

Caryl Feiler, Ida Mae Huse, Norma Stillings, and Betty Moore are planning to attend The Region 10 MRTA Fall Meeting, October 21 in Springfield being hosted by SARTA this year. Betty has donated an afghan to put into the Silent Auction for the MRTA Foundation Fundraiser at that event.

Committee Chairs made reports on different issues. Community Service Chair, Sue Robirds reminded retirees to keep a record of volunteer time and have it ready to turn in at the end of the year. Legislative Chair, Ida Mae Huse asked if members had seen the end-of-the-year legislative report that was sent out by our Missouri State Representative, Lyle Rowland. The retirees had gotten that report. Informative and Protective Chair, Norma Stillings gave a report on the $500 classroom grants that are offered to classroom teachers in Missouri. This information should be made available to all the public schools in Douglas and Ozark Counties. She also gave a report on the Hearing Benefits that are available to MRTA members.

The next meeting will be in Ava at Autumn’s Café , November 8 at 11:30 a.m.
