William “Carl” Coats, 86, went to be with Jesus on Jan. 23, 2016, at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center, Ava, Mo. He was born in Protem, Mo., to William Z. and Ollie (Harless) Coats on Aug. 19, 1929. He was united in marriage to Katherine (Rhynes) Coats on May 16, 1954. To this union three children were born, William (Bill), Alice, and Terry.
Carl enjoyed anything outdoors including hunting, fishing and golfing. His eyes would light up when his family came around, especially his great-granddaughters, Chloe, Lillian and Madelyn. He enjoyed music and sang with various groups including the Baldknobbers, Country Gentleman and Big Creek Bluegrass. He also sang in various revivals and churches throughout the community.
Carl served on Ava City Council for eight years and donated 11 gallons of blood throughout his life with Community Blood Center of the Ozarks.
Carl accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in April 1983.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and two brothers, one of which was killed in action in World War II, as well as a special cousin, RC Chapman.
Carl is survived by his wife of 61 years, Katherine; two sons, Bill and wife, Sherrie, of Ava, and Terry and wife, Diane, Mtn. Grove; daughter, Alice, of Mtn. Home, Ark.; granddaughter, Shannon and husband, John Cornelison, and their three daughters, Chloe, Lillian and Madelyn of Springfield, and a grandson, Jeremy Coats, of Washington, DC. Also surviving are two step granddaughters, their husbands and six step great-grandchildren.
He was known as “Uncle Carl” or “Uncle Dudley” by many nieces, nephews and family friends.
Celebration of life services were held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m., with visitation at 1 p.m. till service time, at Ava Family Funeral Home with Rob Dalton officiating. Burial was at Fannon Cemetery immediately following service.
