Students Go Back to School As Area Schools Start Classes Next Week. 8.9.18

The first day of school most generally brings mixed emotions for everyone involved –– students parents, teachers and administrators, and this 2018-19 year is likely to bring the same level of anxiety and anticipation.  

Education and the learning focus  have drastically changed since the days when we would hear children sing ––

Today, it’s a broader curriculum format, with many different options and challenges, and the old standard of discipline is much different today, as the hickory stick was retired quite some time ago.  

In the Ava R-I school district, for this school year, many activities have already started as new teacher orientation was held on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and a professional development seminar was held on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The seminar focused on dyslexia, suicide prevention and intervention measures for helping students learn.

A district open house for parents, grandparents and students is set for Tuesday, August 14, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with the first day of school for students Thursday, August 16.  

Incoming freshman / new student orientation is on Tuesday, Aug. 14, and will be held in the APAC building.  Freshmen and new students will also pay a $20 book deposit, as well as a technology premium.  The technology fee is due from all high school students.   

The Kindergarten Kick-Off is Monday, August 13, from 6:00 – 7:00 in the kindergarten classrooms, and orientation for incoming fifth-grade students is Tuesday, August 14, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the middle school gym. 

An all-staff in-service day is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the school. 

For parents interested in the after school program, Bears Den, the program will be in full swing on the first day of school.   

For students attending Plainview R-VIII, the first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 16.  Classes begin at 8:20 a.m., with breakfast starting at 7:45 a.m.  The school is hosting an open house on Monday, Aug. 13, from 6-8 p.m. 

At Skyline R-II, student classes start on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 8:10 a.m.  Breakfast begins at 7:45 a.m.  The school is hosting an open house on Tuesday, Aug. 14 from 5-7 p.m.  

The Ava R-I Bear Booster Fall Kick-Off is this Friday, August 10, in the gymnasium.  This event is an opportunity for the community and high school sports enthusiasts to meet the players and show support for the team members.  The volleyball players will be introduced at 5:00 p.m. in the high school gym.  The cheer and dance team members will follow at 5:30 p.m.  At 5:45, the cross country team will be introduced at the softball field, and at 6:00 p.m. softball team members will be presented.  At 6:30 p.m., at the softball field, the football team players will be introduced.  

One change for this school year is the elimination of early outs on Wednesdays.  

Ava R-I lunch prices for the 2018-19 school term are as follows: 

Elementary school students: reduced, $ . 40; full, $1.70. 

Middle and high school students: reduced, $ .40; and full, $1.86. 

Adult: breakfast, $1.65; lunch, $2.35. 

The cost of a carton of milk is 40¢ for everyone.
