Young Ava Volleyball Team Is Working Hard To Improve

The Lady Bears volleyball team traveled to Springfield Tuesday night, Aug. 22, to take on the Lady Irish of Springfield Catholic.
The JV started things off slow at first with a loss in the first set 12-25, but picked up some momentum in the second set with consistent serving from freshmen Paige Kimmons.
The Lady Bears took the second set 25-16, then the third set played out point-for-point for most of the match but the Lady Irish eventually pulled away with the win, 25-20.
Taylor Ernst, also served tough for the Lady Bears gaining two aces for the night. Freshman Makynna Wallace led the team in kills with 5, freshman Hannah Stafford added 4 kills, Ernst had 3 and sophomore Shay Quackenbush added 1.
The varsity team followed up the JV match with a nail biter in the first set. Ava jumped out early with a 6-1 lead, then let the Lady Irish sneak back in the game with tough serving.
The two teams would fight the next couple points out with the Lady Irish never being able to get to more than three points ahead.
The Lady Bears continued to play solid volleyball with many key kills by the front row from sophmores Oliva Heriford, Claire Fossett and Haley Herrera.
It wasn’t quite enough to edge out the Lady Irish and they pulled ahead and won the first set 28-26.
Set two started out rough for the Lady Bears as they trailed the Lady Irish for the whole set and ended up losing the final set 19-25.
“I’m really impressed with how hard this group works the entire game,” said Coach Sarah Roy. “We are still working on some rotation issues and trying to figure out how to start the second set off as good as our first set.”
“The Lady Bears are quite a young team but are led by some experienced upper classmen in senior Kathrin Buff, juniors Lauren Mendel, Kate McDonald and Rebecca Elliott, Roy said.
She continued: “Our upper classmen are doing a phenomenal job leading our younger players and are really helping to set a new standard of play this season.”
Kate McDonald led the team in aces with two, followed by Sydney Snelson with one. Kathrin Buff led the team in digs with 22/24, Olivia Heriford led the team in blocks with two followed by Lauren Mendel and Claire Fossett both adding one apiece. Alyssa Wallace led the team in assists with seven and Kaylee Downs had four. Heriford also led the team in kills with four, followed by Rebecca Elliot with three, Claire Fossett with two, and Haley Herrera, McDonald, and Mendel each adding one kill.
The Lady Bears played their first home match Thursday, Aug. 24, against Spokane.
Ava kept the first match close, but lost 19-25. The Lady Bears came out strong in the second set, but lost their momentum, losing the set and the match, 13-25.
On Monday, Aug. 28, the Lady Bears hosted Fordland and lost in straight sets, 17-25, 11-25.
The girls will be at home against Marshfield tonight (Thursday) and will host New Covenant Academy of Springfield on Sept. 5.
