A Great Warrior

By Barbara Daniel
A few weeks ago I saw a picture of Brigadier General Pershing in the Douglas County Herald. A great general in history who led several expeditions for America’s freedom. He served his country with dignity. His story is one of tragedy and honor.
In August 1915, months before General Pershing led an expedition into Mexico, he lost his wife and three daughters in a fire at their residence in San Francisco, Calif.
In spite of his grief, Pershing heeded the call to duty and his loyalty to his county, he led American forces to victory in WWI. He is the only American promoted in his lifetime to the General of the Armies rank, the highest possible rank in the United States Army.
His story is one of courage and integrity.
There isn’t a WWI memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor this great man. Pershing loved his troops, especially the African American troops called “Buffalo Soldiers.” He devoted his life to his soldiers to overcome his grief.
We must never forget the brave men who fight to keep America free.
