What About This . . .? 5.11.2017

By Wayne William Cipriano

It has been more than five years since I began writing this column.  Time flies when you are having fun.  I’m proud of the fact that I have had an article ready to go every week during that time.  People who have written for the paper for decades won’t think that’s such a big deal, but it is for me.  I was talking about that with a friend when I realized some-thing.

Most readers probably don’t understand the agreement I have with the Douglas County Herald concerning this column, and since it is so simple, I thought I’d write it down:  I write whatever I wish, and as long as I keep the profanity under control, the paper publishes it.  It’s not total editorial freedom, but it is close.

I’ve written a lot of weird stuff:  political commentary, movie reviews, jokes (one of which was really funny at the end of an article but was rewritten because this is, after all, a family newspaper), social criticism, voter motivation, sports stories, history, the weather, freedom, and many other categories that I cannot immediately bring to mind.  Pretty much everthing, even poetry.  And, all of it has been published (except for that really funny joke).

I do not get assignments from the paper, I don’t even get suggestions.  And, I am not even subtlety directed by the application of reinforcement, positively or negatively, ever.  Which has its good and bad points, but whatever appears here is mine and mine alone.

I try to assure that any facts I relate here are just that, facts.

And, when I go on and on about my beliefs, I try to be sure those beliefs are not confused with facts. Of course, like you, I’m pretty sure all my beliefs are correct, and, like you, I try to keep my mind as open as possible to new information that might moderate or change those beliefs.  After all, this stuff is printed on paper, stored for all time by my Cousin Billy.  I surely do not want a Xeroxed copy of some wildly inaccurate “fact” I wrote here sent to me on my birthday every year by Cousin Billy who is wont to punish foolishness in that very manner.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to write this column any way I wish and to have it published, to have my views and my beliefs published exactly as I have written them.

Except for that really funny joke.
