Veterinary Feed Directive Explained At Upcoming Meetings

There are major changes coming regarding the manner in which stockmen use antibiotics in the food and water of their farm animals.

On Jan. 1, 2017 the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) will be enacted under control of the Food and Drug Administration, which will restrict the use of certain antibiotics in the food and water of farm animals to that prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. Farmers, ranchers, those selling medicated feeds, and veterinarians will all be affected.

Farmers can prepare for the VFD by attending one of three evening seminars offered by MU Extension Service in this area. Dr. Craig Payne, MU State Extension Veterinarian, will present VFD seminars with the latest updates at the following dates and locations free of charge:

• Lebanon – Laclede County Extension Center, Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m.

• Ava – Douglas County Livestock Auction (Highway 5 south of Ava), Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m.

• West Plains – West Plains Extension Center, Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m.
