The Ava Middle School football teams traveled to West Plains on Thursday, Oct. 6. The night belonged to the home teams, as the Zizzers won convincingly in both games.
West Plains defeated the Bears 40-14 in the 7th grade contest. West Plains scored twice in each of the first two quarters to take a 32-0 halftime lead.
Ava scored in the third quarter on a 30-yard run by Spencer Skyles. Blayne Mendel passed to Zach Richards for the conversion to reduce the lead to 32-8.
West Plains scored another touchdown early in the final quarter to regain their 32 point advantage. Ava scored as time expired on a touchdown pass from Mendel to Richards that covered a distance of 57 yards.
West Plains jumped on Ava early in the 8th grade game on their way to a 42-24 win. The Zizzers scored three first quarter touchdowns to take a 20-0 lead.
The Bears scored at the 5:30 mark of the second quarter on a three yard run by Zack Miller. Zach Mendel passed to Ethan Johnson for the two point conversion.
West Plains responded with another score only a few plays later and held a 26-8 halftime lead. The Zizzers blocked an Ava punt and recovered it in the end zone to extend their lead to 34-8.
Ava’s Jayden Hicks ran three yards for a touchdown with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter. Mendel passed to Miller for the conversion.
West Plains came back with another quick touchdown in the third quarter to complete their scoring for the night. A one-yard touchdown run by Miller followed by a conversion run by Mendel in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring for the Bears.
