Ava Middle School Football Bears Host Willow Springs

The Ava Middle School Bears hosted the Willow Springs Bears for 7th and 8th grade football games on Thursday, Sept. 29.

Ava won the 7th grade contest 40-0.

Blayne Mendel opened the scoring for Ava with a 10-yard run and the succeeding conversion run. Spencer Skyles ran 11 yards for a touchdown later in the first quarter. Mendel passed to Zach Richards for the two-point conversion.

Mendel scored another first half touchdown with a 15-yard run in the second quarter. Mendel passed to Corey Heinlein for the conversion to propel the Bears to a 24-0 halftime advantage.

Skyles scored his second touchdown of the game on a 61-yard run in the third quarter, followed by a Heinlein run for the conversion. Ava’s final score of the night came on a one-yard run by Aiden Duckett, who also followed with the two point conversion run.

The Willow Springs Bears won the 8th grade game 12-0. Willow Springs scored on a 40-yard fumble return in the first quarter, and posted their final score of the game on a long touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. The Willow Springs defense played a strong game and kept the Bears from finding the end zone.

The next action for the Bears will be today (Thursday, Oct. 6), when they travel to West Plains. The Bears will then close out the 2016 season when they play host to the Mountain Grove Panthers on Thursday, Oct. 13.
