Letter to the Editor – 5.26.2016 School Health

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to the editor to voice my concern for the health of Ava Students.

I know there is a policy against tobacco use by students of Ava schools, which I support 100%.  However, I have an issue when a teacher places her fingers in the mouth of a student and seconds later places the same fingers in the mouth of another student.  This should be a health issue all of us should be concerned with because it spreads germs and possibly serious diseases from student to student.

Most restrooms have signs saying to wash your hands because hands spread disease.  Surely there is a better way to check the mouths of students for tobacco.

I know this happened because I personally witnessed it in the gym during the senior assembly on May 6, while sitting within a few feet of the teacher and students.  I would have let my feelings be known to the administration and school board, but to be honest, I don’t trust them to do anything about it unless in a secret closed session.

As a taxpayer and alumni of Ava I believe parents and the public have a right to know what is going on.  In my opinion the teacher should be reprimanded for her actions and I would be curious to know what else she touched before putting her fingers in the student’s mouths.
