VolleyBears Open SCA Play With Win Over Houston

The Lady Bears are off to a good start in conference play with a big win over Houston last Thursday night.

The JV started the night off with a two-set win over the Lady Tigers with scores of 25-17 and 25-23.

Strong, consistent serving and determined play helped the JV pull out the second set win.

Several Lady Bears, Kathrin Buff, Haylee Hare, Haley Hawkins, and McKenzie Lumley had two aces apiece and Marissa Reynolds had one ace. The Lady Bears were led in kills with two by Kate McDonald, followed by Kahli Miller with one.

The varsity team came out a little too slow in the first set of the match and lost, 25-19.   The team really rallied with Houston but couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole that they had dug at the beginning of the match.

“We didn’t play bad in the first set, we just didn’t do enough at the beginning of the set to keep up with Houston,” said Coach Sarah Roy. By the end of the set the Lady Bears were starting to look alive and rallied with the Lady Tigers.

In the second set the Lady Bears came out ready to play.   Ava took the lead from the beginning of the set and never lost it, finishing the second set 25-22.

The final set was very similar to the second, with the Lady Bears working hard throughout the set to finish the game 25-23.

“The second and third sets really showed what we could do as a team when we all work together and play hard. I was super proud of the seniors and their leadership in the last two sets,” said Roy.

Jasmine Dalton led the team in serving aces with two. Bailey Loge and Makayla Diel added one ace apiece and Sandra Buff led the team in digs with 14.   Makayla Diel led the team in assists with five and Caley Wallace had an additional four.  Lauren Mendel led the team in kills with six, followed by Hunter Shelton with four. Sierra Boatman and Bailey Loge each added two kills and Cera Longino had one kill.

The Lady Bears improved their record to 10-8-1 and 1-0 in conference play.

The Lady Bears will play two more conference games this week, traveling to Salem on Tuesday night and playing at Cabool tonight (Thursday).   The makeup game with Thayer will take place on Monday, Sept. 28 at home.
