Softball Lady Bears Fall to Houston, Defeat Mansfield at Home Tuesday

District Action Begins Next Wednesday

The Ava Lady Bears lost to Houston, 10-5, in SCA play here last Thursday afternoon but turned it around for a 9-1 win over Mansfield here Tuesday.

Tuesday was Senior Night at the Ava softball field, with pregame recognition going to Hope Evans, Jacey Swofford, Kinsey Thompson and Grace Walker.

The conference game at Willow Springs was rained out on Monday and that game was being played Wednesday afternoon.

Houston jumped on the Ava girls for seven runs in the top of the first inning last Thursday and held off a late rally by the Lady Bears to take the win.

After the dismal first inning, the Lady Bears gave up one more run in the second, then put up a row of zeroes through the middle innings.

Ava and Mansfield were scoreless until the bottom of the third when Ava picked up two runs. The Lady Bears would add another in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Mansfield got its only run in the fifth inning.

Ava’s 2015 softball season is rapidly winding down with only two games left on Monday and Tuesday next week before the Class 2 District 7 post-season tournament begins at Gainesville on Wednesday.

In addition to Ava and Gainesville, the district will include Hartville, Mansfield and Seymour.

Ava is scheduled to go to West Plains on Monday, Oct. 5 and will host Springfield Parkview on Tuesday.

As district play begins on Wednesday, Ava is seeded No. 2 behind Gainesville and will play Mansfield (3) in the first round at 5 o’clock on Oct. 7.

Hartville (4) will play Seymour (5) at 2 p.m. and the winner will play top-seed Gainesville at 3:30.

The tournament championship game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
