The Douglas and Ozark Counties Retired Teachers and Other School Personnel met for breakfast Tuesday, March 10 at Autumn’s Café. Those present for this meeting were, Caryl Feiler, Julane Williams, Norma Stillings, Betty Moore, Kay Transano, Marie Bristol, Colleen Lakey, Ruth Evans, Ida Mae Huse, Jenny Billings, Jane Elder, and guest, Nina Carter.
Marie Bristol welcomed the group and handed out the new 2015 Hand Booklets. She asked for any corrections that should be made.
Ida Mae Huse gave a Legislative Report and asked that attention be paid to the HB 1085 and HB 1086. RTA members who have e-mail can receive Legislative updates from MRTA Director, Jim Kreider. We should pay attention to those updates and be ready to call or write to our Representatives and Senators on issues that can impact the retirement system and education.
Marie reported that she had sent Scholarship Applications to the high schools in Douglas and Ozark County. Two scholarships of $200 each are being offered to students planning to be teachers; one to a Douglas County Senior and one to an Ozark County Senior.
There was a motion to change the by-laws to change the regular RTA meeting from the third Tuesday of the month back to the second Tuesday of the month. Jane Elder made the motion. Norma Stillings seconded the motion. This change had been discussed during the December meeting, as well as, in the Executive meeting. The motion carried with no opposition.
There was some discussion on the best times for meetings. The group agreed that the regular meeting times would be set for lunch and not breakfast. Those who drive up from Arkansas have a long way to go.
Nina Carter, president of Douglas County CHART, talked about efforts being made this month concerning substance abuse and drug endangered children. CHART would be sponsoring a town meeting on E-cigarettes and Vaping. This would be held at noon, Friday, March 13. A training was being offered on March 31 at the Ava R-1 Board Room from 9:00 to 3:00 to anyone who works with youth to give insight and suggest solutions to problems that occur when children live with substance abuse.
The next RTA meeting will be held in Gainesville on April 14 at the Senior Center. Lunch will be at 11:30 with a meeting following. Karen Miller our Region 10 MRTA Vice President will be our guest.
