Douglas/Ozark Counties RTA Met Tuesday, Nov. 18

The Douglas and Ozark Counties Retired Teachers and Other School Personnel met Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Autumn’s Café in Ava. Those in attendance were Ruth Evans, Virginia Parsley, Betty Moore, Julane Williams, Barbara Groover, Regina Robertson, Norma Stillings, Marie Bristol, Carolyn Wallace, and Kay Transano.

Marie Bristol called the meeting to order. Norma Stillings asked a blessing on the food. Lunch was ordered from the menu. When the group had finished eating, two former art teachers from the Ava School System, Regina Robertson and Carolyn Wallace, gave a report on their activities since retiring.

Regina brought a display that included some of her Christmas Snowmen, framed painted turkey feathers, Santas painted on old records, and other decorative items. She had a photograph album showing some of her art work and murals that have been put up in public buildings. Regina is very much involved in the community art guild and other projects. She does demonstrations of the turkey feather painting and has displays at Silver Dollar City.

Carolyn showed an example of her clay pottery and a still life painting. Since retiring, Carolyn has met some of her own personal goals as an artist. While she was teaching full time, she did not have time to pursue her own direction. Carolyn’s work has been accepted and is on display in a Springfield gallery. She has her work displayed on Facebook and a Web-site. Carolyn is still active part time in the teaching of art in a Virtual School setting.

Copies of the minutes and treasurer’s report were handed out and read. No corrections were offered. The members present helped stuff envelopes to send out membership forms for those who had not paid their 2015 membership dues. Marie asked members to be talking to teachers who will be retiring inviting them to become members of our local RTA. Marie also announced that the Legislative Day would be February 18, 2015. She is hoping for a good turn-out of MRTA members so that the state legislators will see that retirees are informed and involved in matters that impact public education and retirees. Marie handed out forms to keep track and report the number of volunteer hours spent by retirees. This should be completed and turned in as soon as possible.

The December Douglas and Ozark Counties RTA meeting will be held at the Ava Senior Citizens lunch, Tuesday, December 16. Christmas music will be provided by Singers from Ava High School.
