Bears Advance In Mansfield Tournament With Win Over Norwood Monday Night

The Ava Bears came from behind to defeat Norwood, 50-47, in first round action at the 78th Mansfield Invitational Basketball Tournament on Monday night.
With the win, the Bears will face top-seed Gainesville tonight (Thursday) at 6 o’clock.
The Bulldogs beat New Covenant by 50 points Monday night.
After trailing Norwood 20-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Bears took the lead in the second quarter and held a 29-22 lead at the half.
Ava led 41-35 after three, and held off a fourth quarter charge by the Pirates to maintain the lead and win the game. Big free throws by Coach Scott Payne’s Bears late in the game proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Bears were led in scoring by 6’5″ sophomore Anthony Rosas who had 18 points on the night. Shannon Porter nailed two 3-point baskets and finished with 12 on the night.
Others scoring for Ava were Chase Gastineau 8, John Luebbering 6, Colton Skyles 3 and Zach Hunsaker 3.
Joel Ogletree led Norwood with 13 points and Max Malone had an even dozen.
Tournament finals will be on Saturday with the seventh place game at 3 o’clock, the consolation championship at 4:30, the third place game at 6 and the championship bout at 7:30 p.m.
Next Tuesday night the Bears will be on the road to Hartville for non-conference play.
