Ava Lady Bears Fall to Salem In Cabool Tourney

The Ava Lady Bears opened the 2014-15 basketball season in the Cabool Tournament Monday night and fell to SCA rival Salem, 68-52.
The Lady Bears were led in scoring by junior center Jayce Swofford’s 20 points and Hope Evans followed with 14.
McKenna Hunsaker led the Bears defensively with 10 rebounds and added 12 points to spur the Ava offense.
Swofford had eight rebounds and Evans pulled down seven.
Others scoring for Ava were Emily Guengerich 4 and Ashley Lawrence 2.
The Lady Bears, coached by Steve Sanders, will play Seymour at 8:30 tonight (Thursday) on the consolation side of the bracket.
Tournament finals will be played on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. with the consolation championship, followed by the third place game at 3:30 and the tournament championship at 5 o’clock.
The girls will play at home Monday night, Dec. 15, against Hartville, and will travel to Rogersville on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Coach Sanders, previously an assistant at Mtn. Grove, is Ava’s fourth varsity coach in three years, following Alyssa Paulsell who moved up to an assistant coaching position at Central Methodist College this year.
