Migrating Pelicans Make Stop In Ava

A flock of about 3 dozen American white pelicans made a stop in Ava this week. These birds were found Tuesday morning on the city lagoon near the MoDOT maintenance building. Conservation Agent Mark Henry said it is not unusual to see the birds on the major lakes in Ozark County, but it is a little rare to see the pelicans gather on a pond as small as the city lagoon. After several days of below freezing weather, there was just enough ice on the pond to suspend the big birds (photo below) out on the open water.
