Ava 7th & 8th Grade Teams Drop Football Games At West Plains

The Ava Middle School football teams traveled to West Plains on Thursday, Oct. 9.
The Bears were defeated 20-16 by the Zizzers in the seventh grade game. West Plains scored first at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead.  The Bears put together a seven play,  58 yard drive to score with 1:46 remaining in the first half.
Aeneas Stout capped the drive with an 8-yard run.  Nate Swofford passed to Blake King for the conversion and an 8-6 lead.
West Plains scored to regain the lead with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter.  The Bears responded with a 9-play,  64-yard scoring drive.
Stout ran 24 yards for his second score of the game, tying the game at 14-14. Swofford passed to Julius Griego for the conversion and a 16-14 lead with 3:25 remaining in the game.
The Zizzers scored with 1:25 remaining for the final margin of victory.
Leading tackler for the Bears was Kayden Myers with six tackles.
West Plains won the 8th grade game 36-22. The Bears fell behind 16-0 before a pass from Caleb Johnson to Stephen Copeland went 63 yards for a touchdown.
West Plains scored the next two touchdowns to push their lead to 30-6. Johnson ran 32 yards for a score and completed the conversion pass to Copeland to make the score 30-14.
West Plains scored again late in the third quarter. Johnson closed out Ava’s scoring with a 25-yard run and conversion run in the fourth quarter. Johnson led the team with 16 tackles. Drake King recovered two fumbles for the Ava defense.
