What About This…? 9.25.2014

By Wayne William Cipriano

WELCOME TO AMERICA, where each and every one of you new arrivals will be treated the same by our laws, our customs, and our people as we who have been here a while treat each other. We pledge this regardless of the place from you came, the gender of your body, the color of your skin, the accent of your speech, the balance in your checking account, the complexity and the pronunciation of your name, and what, if any religion you celebrate.

We who arrived here before you see though all that and more, whether our ancestors stepped off the boat onto Plymouth Rock or stepped off the boat on to Ellis Island, and we ask only one question, the same question we have already answered? “Are you now an American?”

And, if your answer is “Yes” then we all shout in return, “WELCOME HOME!”
