What About This…? 7.24.2014

By Wayne William Cipriano

This is just plain offensive!

I am talking about Amendment 1 Ballot Title that is supposed to summarize Amendment 1 proposed to the Missouri Constitution that will be on the August 5, 2014, election ballot. I guess it is there for those of us too busy or too handicapped to read the entire 63 words of the Amendment (if you do not consider Roman number “VI” to be a word, it is 62 words long).

The Ballot Title reads:

Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to ensure that the right of Missouri citizens to engage in agricultural production and ranching practices shall not be infringed?

And then, in the last 16 words of that 63 (or 62) word Amendment 1, it provides the legal justification to do just that – to infringe on our rights to ranch or farm!

They do not even have the decency to hide that infringement language within a long, mind-numbing avalanche of words. It is right there, words 48 through 63, at the end of a 63 word Amendment 1.

That innocuous, even laudable Ballot Title cannot have been a mistake! There is no way anyone who reads English would agree the Ballot Title (“…shall not be infringed.”) reflects accurately what Amendment 1 provides (“…subject to duly authorized powers…”). Who is responsible for that Ballot Title?

They treat us like mushrooms: they keep us in the dark (with a completely inadequate educational system) and feed us…well, you know what those mushrooms thrive in (the Ballot Title). And, they expect to get away with it, too!

Do you think they will? How will you vote?
