Skyline School Board Meets May 22, Acts On Security Issues

The Skyline R-II Board met in regular session on Thursday, May 22, with all seven members present.  Tim Scrivner was sworn in to continue his stint on the board.  The consent agenda items consisting of board minutes, bills and financial statement were presented and approved.
Under old business, the board discussed teacher contracts regarding the shortened school calendar for 2014-2015 and extended day for students.
The board voted to change teacher contracts to 174 days instead of the 178 days. Students will be attending 168 days of school with the school day extending an extra 15 minutes to account for the high school bus to Norwood.
The board heard a summary of the active shooter training that staff attended Thursday afternoon.  The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department also participated in the training.
Two quotes were presented to add a buzzer/camera system to the front entrance. PC Express was granted the bid. This was one of the major recommendations from the training to improve safety at the school. Other recommendations were made and will be considered throughout the next school year.
In new business, the Section 125 Plan that is used to follow the IRS regulations was presented and approved. The board approved continuing use of the Model Compliance Plan from DESE for the Special Education Department.
The June board meeting was moved to the last Thursday of the month, June 26, to finalize the 2013-2014 budget.  The board also discussed the upcoming budget for 2014-2015 and any possible changes.
In the Superintendent’s Report: Enrollment for April was 86 students in K-8th grade with 15 preschool students.  Kindergarten and 8th grade graduation was held May 20 (15 kindergarteners and five 8th graders).  The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 26, at 7 p.m.
