Lady Bears are 1-2; Have Home Opener Tonight

It’s been an interesting opening of the 2013-14 basketball season with more games canceled than have been played because of the early December snow storm.

The Lady Bears opened their season against Salem in the Cabool Tournament and dropped the first round game to the Tigers, 64-57.

After more postponements, the semifinals were played on Saturday night, with the Lady Bears beating Willow Springs 57-41.

At that point, tournament officials said they would not schedule any more games. Additional games would be up to the opposing teams, if they could work out a time to play.

The Lady Bears would be playing Houston for the consolation championship, and Coach Alyssa Paulsell said she is content to let the Jan. 6 SCA game between the two teams also serve as the consolation match.

On Monday night, the Lady Bears traveled to Hartville and took a 61-39 loss at the hands of the Lady Eagles.

The Ava girls will host Rogersville tonight in the Lady Bears’ home opener.

Maison Bovard led the Ava girls with a double-double in the Salem game, scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

The Lady Bears have missed Bovard’s contribution the last two games due to an ankle injury.

MaKenna Hunsaker had 8 points for Ava in the Salem game, and Bailey Lee, Callie Eubanks, Jacey Swofford and Emily Guengerich each had 6 points. Hope Evans added 2 to round out the scoring.

The Lady Bears got balanced scoring from four players in the win over Willow Springs, led by Swofford and Lee with 12 points each and Hunsaker and Bailey Loge with 11 apiece. Hunter Shelton added 4, Guengerich 3, and Eubanks and Evans 2 apiece.
