The Ava Bears opened the 2013-14 basketball season with a 58-52 win Tuesday night at Spokane.
Coach Nathan Houk said it was good to open the season with a win, but there are things the team needs to work on.
The Bears are scheduled to play Mansfield Friday night, then will return to the Mansfield gym next week for the annual Mansfield Tournament.
Seeded second, the Bears will play New Covenant at 6 o’clock Tuesday night.
Gainesville is seeded first at Mansfield, ahead of the Bears, with the host Lions in the third slot. Other teams by seeding include Niangua, Norwood, Houston, New Covenant and Riverview.
Tournament semifinals will be played on Thursday night, Dec. 12, with the finals on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Ben Loge led the Bears in scoring and rebounding Tuesday at Spokane, with 21 points and 12 boards. He also pulled off five steals in the game.
Tristan Haltom had nine points and eight rebounds for Ava which led 31-25 at the half.
Coach Houk said his Bears were able to break Spokane’s press and score in the transition. But, he said, as players got tired they became less patient and did not wait for the good shot.
Coach Houk also said the team settled in and rebounded much better in the second half.
Others scoring for Ava were Cooper Emerich 14, Brandon Guengerich 8 and Seth Dobbs 6.
