Ava Middle School Girls’ Basketball Season Has Begun

Middle School Girls Basketball is under way.

The seventh  grade Lady Bears improved their record to 3-1 after defeating both West Plains and Reeds Spring in last week’s play.

On Tuesday night the Lady Zizzers came to Ava and left with a 45-8 loss.

The Lady Bears got off to a quick start and led 27-0 at half-time. Lauren Mendel led all scorers with 13 points, followed by Jada Gunter with 8. Others scoring for Ava include Araina Evans 6, Ashton Bewley 4, Gracie Heinlein 4, McKenzie Lumley 4, Kiaunna Snow 2, Emily Frampton 2, and Jessica Stafford 2.

On Thursday night the seventh  grade Lady Bears sent the Lady Wolves home with a 47-9 loss. Once again the Lady Bears got off to a quick start with their front court pressing and speed and led 24-5 at half-time. Leading all scorers were Bewley and Gunter with 14 each, Mendel 10, Snow 4, Heinlein 4, Frampton 1.

The eighth  grade Lady Bears also picked up two wins last week and improved their record to 3-2. On Tuesday night the Lady Bears defeated the Zizzers 44-19. Hailey Pedersen led all scorers with 20 and was 10/16 from the free throw line. Sierra Boatman contributed 14 followed by Kaylee Evans with 6, and Kathrin Buff and Serenity Bristol with 2 apiece.

On Thursday night the Lady Bears looked to be in trouble trailing the Lady Wolves 13-4 at the end of the first  quarter and 18-11 at the half.  The Lady Bears came out in the third quarter  with a little more life and pulled within 3. With less than 2 minutes left the Lady Bears tied the game at 24 and went into the final minute of play tied at 26.

Ava’s Hailey Pedersen came through big hitting the inside shot and getting fouled.  Pedersen went on to hit the free throw and put Ava ahead 29-26. The Lady Wolves would get one more chance to score but fell short in the final seconds of the game. Pedersen and Buff led all scorers with 8 each, Evans 6, Bristol 3, Boatman 2, and Makayla Diel 2.

The Lady Bears will take on Liberty and Strafford this week before the holiday break and return to play next week facing SCA schools Cabool and Mountain Grove.
