Lady Bears Fall to Buffalo In District Softball Tournament

The Ava Lady Bears dropped a 5-2 decision last Wednesday afternoon to end the 2013 softball season in the first round of the Class 3, District 11 Tournament.
Buffalo, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advanced through the bracket and played No. 4 Marshfield for the championship on Monday, Oct. 14. Marshfield defeated Buffalo 9-2 for the championship.
Ava finished the season 9-12 overall and 6-1 in the SCA, taking second place in conference behind undefeated Salem.
In district tournament competition last Wednesday afternoon at Rogersville, Ava took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Buffalo responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Bison then added two more in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Senior second baseman Bailey Lee had Ava’s only hit in the game, an RBI double.  Lakota Blakey drove in Ava’s only other run of the day.
Buffalo pitcher Jordan Shewmaker walked two Ava batters, and Hope Evans was hit by a pitch for the only Ava base runners of the day.
Shewmaker struck out 10 Ava batters.
Misty Regennitter struck out five and walked nine, and allowed five hits in the game.
Sophomore catcher Jacey Swofford led the Lady Bears in hitting this season with a .393 average. Swofford batted .469 with runners in scoring position, and drove in 29 runs for Ava.
Senior shortstop Maison Bovard had a .381 average, with two home runs and 20 runs batted in on the season.
Junior outfielder Maranda Yost had two home runs and drove in 20 runs, hitting for a .351 average on the season.
Senior third baseman Kayte Aid hit for a .353 average, and had the team’s best on-base percentage at .548, with 20 bases on balls.
