Football – Ava 7th Grade Beats Cabool; 8th Grade Falls to Bulldogs

The Ava Middle School football teams played at Cabool on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The 7th grade Bears posted a 40-20 victory over the Bulldogs.
Ava opened the scoring on the first possession of the game. Caleb Johnson ran 17 yards for a touchdown to cap a six play, 51 yard drive.
Johnson scored again for the Bears with a 40-yard run with 5 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Johnson passed to Kobi Gasek for the conversion to extend the Ava lead to 14-0.
Johnson again connected with Gasek at the 5 minute mark of the second quarter, an eight-yard scoring play. Waylin Moon ran for the conversion to increase the lead to 22-0.
Cabool scored on their next possession to cut the lead to 22-6, but the Bears covered 71 yards in four plays in the final 1:20 of the half to score again. Johnson’s 14-yard run gave the Bears a 28-6 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs started the scoring in the second half by returning the second half kickoff for a touchdown, reducing the Ava lead to 28-12. Johnson answered with a 60-yard touchdown run on Ava’s first scrimmage play of the ensuing drive. Later in the quarter a 37-yard run by Moon set up a 1-yard touchdown run for Johnson. A late touchdown and conversion by the Bulldogs closed the gap to the final margin of victory for the Bears.
The Cabool Bulldogs defeated the Bears 26-16 in the 8th grade contest. Cabool took the opening kickoff and moved the ball 65 yards in 10 plays for the initial score of the game. The Bulldogs added another score later in the period to increase their lead to 12-0.
The Bears responded early in the second quarter with a touchdown of their own. Aaron Everett connected with Takoma Dobbs for a 38-yard passing touchdown. Everett then passed to Quincey McDonald for the conversion to cut the Cabool lead to 12-8.
Cabool scored a touchdown early in the third quarter and added another score with 5 minutes to go in the game to boost their lead to 26-8. Ava’s Kaid Sizemore ran 16 yards for a touchdown with about one minute remaining in the game. Dobbs passed to McDonald for the conversion and the final 26-16 margin.
Leading tacklers for the Bears were Dobbs with 8 tackles, followed by Connor Moran and McDonald with 7 tackles each.
The Bears will next play host to the Houston Tigers on Thursday, Sept. 19. The 7th grade game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
