Lady Bears Beat Norwood; Lose to Mtn. Grove in SCA

GBBvsNorwood.352The Ava Lady Bears defeated Norwood in non-conference play here Monday night, 47-24. Last Thursday night the Ava girls suffered a disappointing one-point loss to Mtn. Grove in league play.

The Lady Bears rallied back from a 17-point deficit on Thursday and had a chance to win the game, but lost in the final seconds, 50-49.

Senior Hannah Johnson led Ava with 14 points and Bailey Lee added 11.

Maddie Halford had 18 points for the Lady Panthers.

Others scoring for Ava were Maison Bovard 9, Jacey Swofford 8, Shelby Campbell 4, Callie Eubanks 2 and Erica Croney 1.

Ava Junior Varsity defeated Mtn. Grove 33-16.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead against Norwood on Monday night and never looked back.

Ava held a 26-15 lead at halftime, and held Norwood to just two points in the third period to lead 32-17 after three.

Monday was Senior Night for the Ava girls as it was the final home game of the season.

Lee sank six 3-point baskets and finished the game with 22 points on Monday. Bovard added 11 for Ava. Others scoring were Johnson 5, Swofford 2, Christina Shortt 2, MaKenna Hunsaker 2, Campbell 2 and Croney 1.

Sophomore Madison Crain led Norwood with nine points.

The Ava girls will play at Blue Eye in non-conference action tonight (Thursday).

The Lady Bears will travel to Forsyth for a make-up game Friday night. Two quarters of junior varsity play will begin at 6 o’clock followed by the varsity game.

On Monday, Feb. 11, the Lady Bears will face Willow Springs in conference play, and on Thursday night the girls will round out the regular season at Thayer. The agenda there begins at 5 p.m. with JV boys, followed by varsity girls then varsity boys. There will be no JV girls’ game at Thayer.
