Douglas Co. Democrats Meet Tuesday, Oct. 2

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, Vice Chair Teresa Tost called the Douglas County Democrats meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. and welcomed members to the meeting.

Members were told that the chair, Gene Cherry, is home from the hospital and doing well after his fall from the roof of his house.  We wish Gene a speedy recovery.

Treasurer Chaz Franzke submitted the treasurer’s report and it was approved by members.

Old Business: Tost told the members that she had spoken to Tanya Williams to see if she would accept the position of secretary of our group and Tanya has agreed to serve in this position.

There was discussion on whether to have a table at the Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday of October.  A motion was made, seconded, and passed unanimously to wait until next spring to continue this activity to benefit the local schools’ backpack programs.

We were told that Gene Cherry still has political signs which need to be distributed and several members decided to call Gene and see how they could take over this endeavor.

New Business:   Discussion was held on the candidates interested in being appointed to the position of Associate Judge for Douglas County.  It was decided that our committee will support Bob Brandon for this position.  We will draft and sign letters of support at our November meeting and send these to Michael Brett at the Governor’s Office. This appointment will be made after the November election.

Members were told that absentee ballots are currently available at the Douglas County Courthouse.

Discussion was held on the upcoming election in November and committee members decided to give their support to the following candidates:  President – Barack Obama; Senator – Claire McCaskill; Governor – Jay Nixon; Lt. Governor – Susan Montee; Attorney General – Chris Koster; and State Treasurer – Clint Zweifel.

In our local election, all candidates are running unopposed except in the sheriff’s race.  Members unanimously decided to support our current sheriff, Chris Degase.

Members discussed purchasing local radio air time and newspaper articles to advertise our support of candidates in local, state, and national elections.  Vice Chair Tost will check on the feasibility of this advertising and notify members by email.

Our next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Krazy Daze Restaurant.  Any questions can be directed to Tanya Williams at 683-3884.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
