Softball Lady Bears Beat Rogersville and Hartville

The Ava Lady Bears softball team picked up two non-conference wins during the past week, defeating Rogersville 8-4 on Thursday and downing Hartville 13-3 here Tuesday afternoon.

The West Plains tournament on Saturday was rained out.

At Rogersville on Thursday afternoon, the Lady Bears got 8 runs on 10 hits and committed 2 errors. The Wildcats had 4 runs on 9 hits and also had 2 errors.

Abbie Sparnicht and Jacey Swofford made up the Ava battery and also helped Ava’s cause at the plate. Swofford was 1-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and one run scored. Sparnicht was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

Kayte Aid and Lakota Blakey also had two RBIs each for Ava and Tailer Stofer was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and one run batted in.

Hannah Johnson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Ava took a narrow 3-2 lead into the seventh inning at Rogersville but scored five runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game open. Rogersville came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Ava fell behind early here Tuesday but made a nice recovery to defeat Hartville 13-3 in five innings.

The Lady Bears took advantage of four Hartville errors to secure the win.

Sparnicht was 1-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Bailey Lee was 1-for-3 with a double, one run scored and two RBIs, and Lakota Blakey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sparnicht and Swofford again made up the battery.

The Lady Bears will play at Thayer today (Thursday) and will play in the Branson Lady Pirates Tournament on Saturday.

Ava will open with Springfield Kickapoo at 9 a.m. and will play McDonald County at 10:30.

The morning pool play will determine pairings for the afternoon finals which are set to begin at 2 o’clock.

Looking ahead to next week, the Lady Bears will travel to Mtn. Grove on Monday in SCA action, then will be back home on Tuesday to play Lebanon in the second annual Hospice Compassus game.

Pregame activities will start at 4:15 and all money raised at the game will go to patients in this community. No amount of money from this event will go for administrative costs.

The mission of Hospice Compassus is to ensure that at the end of life, people have the opportunity to maintain their dignity and self-respect, and live their final days free of pain with the involvement and support of loved ones.

Hospice personnel provide a special kind of care focusing on relief of pain, symptom control and spiritual and emotional support. Care goes out to the patient and caregivers. Hospice is not about “giving up” but instead focuses on quality of life and making the wishes of the patient and family caregivers a priority.

They provide training to family members and loved ones in the home. Bereavement support is available to families for a year after the death of a loved one.
