Garrett Van Alstyne Jr., 70

Garrett Van Alstyne Jr., age 70, of Oak Ridge, N.J., went to be at rest in Livingston, N.J., on March 21, 2012.

He was the beloved husband of the former Yolanda (Lonnie) (Piatti) of Oak Ridge; loving father of Nicole Hammett and her husband, Chris, of Drury, Mo., and Garrett Gregg Van Alstyne, of Hope, N.J.; brother of Karen Festa and her husband, Peter, of Oakland; grandfather of Matthew and Adam Hammett; brother-in-law of Abby Piatti of Vernon; uncle of Peter Festa Jr., Gregg Festa, Bryan Hunt, Nicole Piatti, Noel Piatti and Cassandra Hunt. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.

Born in Paterson, N.J., he lived in West Milford before moving to Oak Ridge. He was a maintenance mechanic for Boonton Board of Education for 13 years before retiring. Mr. Van Alstyne was an Eagle Scout, then became a Troop Leader for mentally challenged children. Garrett was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. He was a member of the NJEA and belonged to an RV club, and enjoyed driving his camper.

Services were at the Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd, Totowa, N.J., on Tuesday, March 27, at 10 a.m. Visitation was Monday, 4-8 p.m., at Festa Memorial Funeral Home.

Graveside services will take place at Gentryville Church Cemetery, Drury, Mo., at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, with military honors by Douglas County American Legion #112 and Ava VFW #5993. Graveside services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Mo.
