'Bud' Daugherty Inducted Into Field Trial Hall of Fame

The late Hugh J. (Bud) Daugherty, of Ava, was recently inducted into the Field Trial Hall of Fame. Bud Daugherty, a highly successful professional pointing bird dog trainer, was born in Dewey, Okla., on Aug. 18, 1932.  He retired in 1982 after recording an amazing 23 open all-age field trial championships!
That record includes the National Field Trial Championship on hallowed grounds at the Ames Plantation (Tennessee) in 1974 with a male pointer named Crossmatch.
Daugherty won the Continental twice; in 1974 with Crossmatch, and again in 1977 with Buckboard.   Included among his other prestigious wins were: The Quail Invitational-1974, with Oklahoma Paladin Pache; the Southern Championship-1978, with Man’s Knighted Squire; and the Continental Derby-1978, with Barshoe Buttonhook.
Daugherty was also the regional favorite to win, counting among his championship trophies the Missouri Championship, the Oklahoma Championship (4 times), the Texas Championship (twice), the Southwestern, and the All-American Quail Championship.
On the plains and in Canada, he also racked up the Border International (twice), the Saskatchewan (3 times), the Dominion, the All-American Chicken Championship, and the National Chukar Championship.
Dogs under Daugherty’s tutelage were awarded the Purina Top Dog Award in 1974 with Crossmatch, and again in 1977 with Buckboard.
Suffering the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease, he died on Jan. 27, 2009, at the age of 76 while residing in the Gentryville, Mo. area.
