Ava's Dorothy Norman Chapter of NHS Attends State Conference

Members and advisers of the Ava High School National Honor Society attended the Missouri Association of NHS Convention for the seventh consecutive year at Tan-Tar-A March 5-6. More than 300 NJHS and NHS members and NHS advisers representing 25 schools from across Missouri attend the conference.

The state president school, Grandview High School, presented a successful conference with the theme “Wave of the Future.”  At the first general session, Mr. Jim King, executive director of the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, welcomed the students and congratulated them on their academic achievements and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.

Keynote speaker for the conference was Jim Lysaght, former Highway Patrolman turned entertainer. He used magic and comedy to inspire students to determine their own goals and path in life. Following the keynote, students were given the opportunity to participate in workshops on leadership, scholarship, character and service. Speakers included members of the Ava High School staff: Alison Decker and Ron Orcutt.

Following the elegant buffet dinner, students explored the various activities available at the Tan-Tar-A resort, including the indoor pool and bowling alley. They later attended a karaoke contest and dance. Ava High School NHS Secretary Lucas Tabor won first place in the highly competitive karaoke contest.

For the NHS State Service Project, conference attendees collected travel sized toiletry items to donate to Ronald McDonald House

As state historian school, Ava members were in charge of documenting the conference to include in the State Scrapbook.

In their re-election campaign for state historian school for 2012-2013, the students participated in a student-created skit that successfully incorporated the conference theme and assisted in AHS winning the election to serve in this state office.

As state historian school, Ava NHS will be responsible for documenting the State Convention next year.  With their re-election, this will be the sixth state office Ava chapter has held in its seven years of attendance.
