City Council Approves Zoning Changes, Okays Grant Funding Guidelines
The Ava Board of Aldermen met Tuesday evening for a brief session, with each councilman present for the meeting.
In a 3-0 vote, the council adopted a resolution stating the City of Ava will meet grant-funding guidelines as required by the Department of Agriculture. This opportunity was discussed during the Tuesday, Feb. 14 meeting when it was stated the funds will be used to purchase three new storm sirens for the City of Ava, a total cost of $60,000. If awarded the grant, the city’s match will be $15,000.
However, Janice Lorrain, Director of Planning & Development, has predicted the chance of receiving the grant is slim.
Councilman Billy Long abstained from the vote.
The board unanimously approved two zoning modifications as recommended by the planning and zoning commission. Both sites, located on the southeast quadrant of town, are defined as follows:
– property owned by trustees of Jasper F. Cropsey Memorial trust on SE 8th Street; and
– property on SE 8th Street owned by Kent Stamper.
Both locations were previously zoned agriculture and re-coded to R-2, two-family residential on Tuesday evening.
City councilman Burrely Loftin commented that the new water tower on the south side of town needed to be checked for a possible leak, or problem. Loftin noted the tank appears to have a spot of rust on the east side of the structure, at the top.
Council voted to approve the municipal court docket as presented, and the payment of bills.
No votes were taken in closed session.
Board members and city officials will meet again Tuesday, March 13, at Ava City Hall. Meetings start at 5 p.m.
