Lady Bears Pick Up Two Wins This Week

The Ava Lady Bears picked up two more big wins this week, including another overtime win over Blue Eye on Thursday night and an SCA victory over Thayer Tuesday night.

The Thayer game was originally scheduled for Monday, but due to a snow cancellation the varsity game was moved to Tuesday with the varsity boys’ game.

It was also Senior Night for the basketball teams and cheerleaders.

The Ava girls defeated Thayer 55-31, behind 26 points by senior Payton Lakey.

Last Thursday night the Ava girls hosted Blue Eye and for the second time in 2012 went to overtime before beating the Lady Bulldogs, 44-43.

Ava also beat Blue Eye in overtime in the semifinals of the Reeds Spring Tournament in January.

Ava had Blue Eye down 19-10 after one quarter of play on Thursday night. But the visitors kept chipping away at the lead, and by the end of regulation the score was tied at 40-all. Ava outscored the Bulldogs 4-3 in the 4-minute overtime period.

Jorie Garrett led the Lady Bears in scoring with 16 points and Lakey added 11. Emily Sterling had 8 points, Abbie Lansdown 5 and Bethany Horn 4, to round out the tally.

Kayla Hickey had 15 points for Blue Eye and Tressa Linson added 12.

The Ava girls took an early command of the Thayer game Tuesday night and did not let up, despite Coach Clint Gazette’s effort to let the junior varsity girls get their share of playing time.

All of Ava’s scoring was by the six seniors. In addition to Lakey’s 26, Garrett had 13, Lansdown 10, Sterling 3, Horn 2 and Morgan Emerich 1 point.

Freshman Jordan Alford led Thayer with 11 points and sophomore Elly Burrell had 10 for the Lady Bobcats.

The Ava girls will close out the regular schedule in SCA action at Houston tonight (Thursday), and will have a week off before starting district play the following week.

The Lady Bears improved their record to 5-1 in SCA and 18-6 overall.
