VFW Will Conduct Flag Day Ceremony
In honor of Flag Day, everyone is welcome to attend a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, June 14 on the Ava square. Veterans of Foreign Wars Russell T. Scott Post 5993 will conduct the short ceremony which begins at 12:30 p.m. And, this year, the ceremony will be held in the gazebo in the center of the square.
The first known day designated to celebrate the American flag occurred in 1885 when a Wisconsin public school observed June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” They chose that day to celebrate the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Flag Resolution of 1777.
During the years that followed, “Flag Day” continued to be celebrated in communities across America. However, it was not until Aug. 3, 1949, when President Truman signed an Act of Congress, that a National Flag Day was established on June 14 of each year.
If you have a faded, worn, or tattered American flag you want disposed of with honor, bring it with you to the ceremony. For more information call 683-6741.
