City Clean-Up

Apr 24, 2008

The City of Ava has set the week of April 28 through May 2 for the annual spring city clean-up, and area residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity.

Not only are city residents being offered an opportunity to dispose of unwanted items, but the invitation is extended to county residents, as well, as the South Central Solid Waste Management District will also help.

A detailed list of item that are acceptable, and drop-off sites for these items, can be found on Page A-2 of this newspaper.

In Ava, city crews will pick up junk and rubbish on the east side of town on Monday and Tuesday, and on the west side on Wednesday and Thursday. This service is free, but residents are urged to have items out early as there will be no call-backs.

Accepted by the city collection crews will be chairs, sofas, mattresses, and tree limbs and brush cut on the premises by the owner.

Not accepted in this free pick-up is household waste normally picked up by the sanitation department, tree limbs or brush cut by a contractor, paint, batteries, computers, TVs, microwaves, pesticides and herbicides.

These unacceptable items (except brush and limbs) can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste pickup site at DoCo, Inc., on Saturday, April 26, however.

On April 24 and 25, city and county residents can take appliances and metal to the DoCo Recycle Center on NW 9th St. (behind Subway). Old tires can be taken to the county maintenance shed on FF Highway anytime for disposal by residents. Only standard size car and light truck tires are accepted there.

Ava Mayor Leon Harris is urging residents to use this opportunity to get rid of metal, appliances and other types of junk free of charge. After the clean-up, the mayor says he will instruct the code enforcement officer and city police to issue citations to those who do not comply with city codes regarding rubbish, junk autos and high weeds.
