School Board, City Council Members

Apr 3, 2008

Next Tuesday is Municipal Election Day, but in Douglas County the election will be dominated by school elections.
In the City of Ava, only incumbent City Council members Ric Engelhardt and Judy Lovan are seeking re-election, with no opposition.

But in the Ava R-1 School election, five candidates are seeking election to three positions to be filled.

A race also exists in the Plainview R-8 School District in southwest Douglas County. In the Skyline R-2 District, voters may fill board seats by write-in vote.

Candidates for the three board seats being vacated in the Ava District include Jeff Davis, an incumbent board member who is completing an unexpired one-year term, along with Randy Spurlock, Walter Walters, Bill Philpott and Johnny Burkdoll. All three positions are regular three-year terms.
Retiring board members John Wallace and Bill Heath are not seeking re-election.

Plainview voters will elect a total of four board members on Tuesday as three regular three-year terms are being decided as well as a one-year term. Candidates for the three-year terms are Kim Hathcock, Mandy Whitaker-Lehmann, Amanda LeVelle, Sheila Hunsaker and Larry A. Tidwell. Stan Humbyrd is unopposed for election to the one-year term on the board.

At Skyline R-2 School District Miranda Potter is the only candidate filed for election, with three seats to be filled.

Voters will also have an opportunity to elect a member to the board of the Ava Area Ambulance District by write-in ballot in District 3, which consists of Walls, Springcreek and Campbell townships. Only voters in those three townships will receive ballots. That position is currently filled by Jim Brown, of Squires.

Voters in the extreme northwest corner of Douglas County will help elect one member to the Southern Webster County Fire Protection District. Carolyn Hyde, Jeff Rogers and Corey Mitchell are candidates for one six-year term on that board.

Polls for Tuesday’s election will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. A complete list of all polling places can be found in this newspaper, along with sample ballots for the election.

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse will be open this Saturday, from 8 a.m. till 12 noon, for the benefit of persons who may need to vote an absentee ballot for Tuesday’s election.
