Two Bradleyville Students In Top One Percent

Mar 6, 2008

A pair of Bradleyville School students, Susan Swadley and Phillip Weaver, were honored at the Missouri Recycling Association's (MORA) Recycling Awareness Day in the State Capitol rotunda on Feb. 28.

Susan and Phillip's poster designs were two of just 39 artworks from 4500 entries statewide chosen for inclusion in MORA's annual recycling calendar. Phillip's poster took second place honors among the state’s seventh graders, while Susan took a third place among high school juniors.

“I am so proud of Susan and Phillip,” said Camille Howell Dautrich, their art teacher. “To think that fewer than one percent of entrants were selected, and that Bradleyville students won two awards is just great.”

Susan is the daughter of Allen and Tammi Swadley, of Ava, and Phillip is the son of Tom and Joyce Weaver, of Bradleyville.

Students from public and private schools across Missouri submitted entries for the contest. Entries were judged on artistic merit and on how well they expressed the contest’s theme, “Recycle: It All Comes Back to You.”

Winners received a Missouri Recycles Calendar, a certificate of recognition signed by the Governor and a reusable canvas bag featuring their artwork. Winners were also entertained by “The Fishin’ Magicians.” Although the events of the day were lighthearted and fun, recycling is an industry in Missouri that provides jobs for more than 28,000 people.

Missouri manufactures more than $2 billion worth of goods for sale out of recovered materials, and the total payroll for collection, processing, manufacturing, reuse and remanufacturing accounts for more than $700 million in direct payroll.
