Feb 28, 2008

Bradleyville and Chadwick girls will play for the championship of the Class 1 District 3 Tournament here on Friday night. Boys’ semifinals games will be played tonight (Thursday) to determine who will advance to the championship bout. The girls’ championship will begin at 6 o’clock Friday, followed at 7:30 by the boys’ finals.

Ava is hosting the Class 1 District 3 tournament again this year as a central location for the schools that are spread from Dora to Hurley and from Niangua to Bakersfield.

The No. 1 seed Bradleyville girls, who received a first-round bye, defeated Hurley, 58-38, Tuesday in the semifinals. Chadwick advanced to the semifinals by defeating Lutie, 64-29, in the first round on Saturday afternoon and beat Bakersfield 60-37 on Tuesday night.

Bakersfield battled Chadwick in the first half before slipping to a 29-21 deficit at halftime. But the quick Chadwick Lady Cardinals outscored the Lady Lions 31-16 in the second half to take the win.

Bradleyville got balanced scoring from four different players who reached double digits en route to a 20-point win Tuesday night.

Lindsey Clemans led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, with Megan Taylor and Melanie Haes adding 12 points each and Hailee Norwine scoring 11.

Kristen Courtney scored 22 points for Hurley and Kallie Flood had 10 points. Courtney Cattanach added 6 points, to round out the scoring for the Lady Tigers.

Krysten Dollarhide had 19 points for Chadwick and Brittney Jones, the only senior on the squad, added 18.

Bakersfield was led by Brooke Lair’s 16 points.

Play opened at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon with No. 5 Hurley upsetting No. 4 Dora, 52-45. Courtney had 22 points for Hurley and Flood added 21.

Ayla Secor led Dora with 15 points.

In the second game of the day, Chadwick pounded Lutie, with Brittney Jones scoring 28 points for the Lady Cardinals. Katie Noah had 15 points for Lutie.

In the final game of the opening round, Bakersfield jumped out to a 40-15 halftime lead over Niangua and went on to beat the Lady Cardinals 72-32. Lair scored 20 for Bakersfield and Stephany Kasinger added 18 for the Lady Lions.

Niangua’s Christa Johnston had 22 points to lead all scorers.

In boys’ first round play on Monday night, Hurley (5) opened with a 61-45 upset win over Niangua (4). Steven Jennings led the Hurley Tigers with 17 points and Larry Cloud added 16. Niangua was paced by 17 points from Justin Miller.

No. 2 Dora took the measure of Lutie, 85-16, allowing the Indians only four points in the second half.

The Falcons were led by 22 points from Derik Collins, as 11 different players figured in the tally.

In the final game of first round action, Bakersfield defeated Bradleyville 58-42, with sophomore Dakota Ellison leading the Lions with 13 points. Kyle Parrish and Seth Lash had 10 points each for Bakersfield.

J.J. Downs led Bradleyville with 13 points and Nick Norwine added 12.

The remainder of the bracket shapes up like this: at 6 o’clock tonight top-seed Chadwick will face No. 4 Hurley in boys’ semifinals action, and Dora will play Bakersfield. The winners will meet at 7:30 on Friday night for the tournament championship.

That game will be preceded on Friday by Bradleyville facing Chadwick at 6 o’clock in the girls’ championship.

Winners of the District 3 tournament will play Tuesday night, March 4, at Republic High School, against the District 4 champions.
