Ava Girls End Season In
The Ava Lady Bears wrapped up the basketball season with a 15-12 record, dropping a 58-52 decision to Rogersville in the first round of the Class 4 district tournament at Branson Saturday.
The Ava girls played three games in three days, including a make-up game at Salem on Friday night.
On Thursday, the Lady Bears traveled to Cabool and took a 74-29 South Central Association win from the Lady Bulldogs. Twelve different girls figured in the scoring for Ava which led 48-14 at halftime.
Kendra Dering led the Lady Bears with 14 points. Jasmine Miller added 13 points and Kayla Dooms dropped in 12 as the Lady Bears coasted to victory. Others scoring for Ava were Danielle Cheyney 7, Chelsea Dooms 7, Janine Parker 5, Kristen Hastings 4, Katie Nelson 3, Caitlin Elliott 3, Courtney Shelton 2, Kelli Bilyeu 2, and Kayla Marrs 2.
On Friday night the varsity girls traveled to Salem to make up a game canceled earlier in the week, and lost the final SCA contest of the season, 59-50. The Ava girls finished 5-2 in the conference.
Miller led Ava with 12 points, with Nelson adding 11. Others scoring were Dering 9, Elliott 8, Cheyney 6, Marrs 2 and Kayla Dooms 2.
Salem connected on 13 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter and made 19 of 28 in the game. Allison Jones scored 21 points for the Lady Tigers.
Cheyney hit three baskets from behind the arc and converted five of six free throws Saturday at Branson to lead the Lady Bears with 20 points in the season-ending loss to Logan-Rogersville.
Others scoring for Ava were Miller 9, Nelson 8, Dering 8, K. Dooms 5, and Elliott 2.
