Lady Bears Fall To Norwood
The Ava Lady Bears played only one game this week after having the Houston game cancelled twice due to circumstances involving the weather.
The girls traveled to Norwood Monday night and suffered a 49-43 non-conference loss which drops the Lady Bears to 12-10 on the year.
Ava held a narrow 2-point lead after one quarter of play, but Norwood outscored the Lady Bears 17-12 in the second quarter to hold a 28-25 advantage. The Lady Pirates also outscored Ava 11-8 in the third quarter to establish the winning margin.
Danielle Cheyney led Ava in scoring with 15 points and Kayla Dooms added 11. Rounding out the Ava tally were Kendra Dering 6, Jasmine Miller 4, Caitlin Elliott 4, and Katie Nelson 3.
Julie Gray scored 14 for Norwood and Shelly Stamper added 11.
Ava Junior Varsity defeated Norwood 43-38.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to play at Houston last Thursday night, but that game was postponed due to slick roads. The game was rescheduled for Tuesday night, but when the team got to Houston they learned that a thunderstorm had knocked out the power at the school and it would take several hours to restore electricity.
So, once again, the South Central Association game has been rescheduled.
Now, the girls are scheduled to travel to Texas County with the boys on Friday night, Feb. 8. The varsity girls and varsity boys will play, and there will be no junior varsity action, according to Athletic Director Larry Silvey.
In the meantime, the Lady Bears will host Thayer tonight (Thursday) in the final home game of the season. Senior players will be recognized during “Senior Night” activities.
