Thornfield Woman Accepts Internship With Doe Run Co.

ST. LOUIS – The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that over the next ten years, the mining industry will need more than 80,000 workers to offset retiring miners and meet projected growth demand. Doe Run provides annual internships to help train future mine professionals to be leaders in the industry.
Carol Williams, from Thornfield, has accepted an internship with the company.
“Doe Run enables students to obtain real-life experiences in the fields of mining, engineering, geology and environmental science,” said Lisa Henn, talent development manager at Doe Run. “Our internship program gives students an advantage over their peers as they develop into professionals.”
This summer, Doe Run welcomed the following individuals to its 2016 internship program:
• Nathan VanDomelen, from Portland, Oregon, is a recent graduate of the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He supports Doe Run’s exploration team in Viburnum as well as the Resource Recycling facility, where he will be working on the clarifier and sulfuric acid concentration,
• Justin Carman, from Golconda, Illinois, follows a family history in the mining industry, and works at Doe Run’s Brushy Creek Mine, Carman is a mining engineering student at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
• Kevin Puetz, from Wildwood, Missouri, currently studies geological engineering at Missouri S& T, and holds a degree in geology and geophysics. He supports Fletcher Mine in a number of projects, including work with the mine’s ventilation unit.
• Carol Williams, from Thornfield, Missouri, is a recent graduate of Missouri S&T with a degree in biological sciences, She assists Doe Run with environmental improvement projects as part of the environmental, health and safety (EHS) team.
“When we expose students to what we’re doing at Doe Run, they have the opportunity to learn alongside industry professionals who can teach them about the industry,” said Mark Coomes, vice president – human resources and community relations at Doe Run. “Our interns leave Doe Run better equipped for their careers, and many of them go on to work for Doe Run and other major U.S. mining companies.”
Doe Run’s summer internship program includes defined projects in areas such as geology, environmental stewardship, metallurgy, and mechanical and mine engineering. At the end of the term, each intern presents his or her project to the company’s executive team.
