Mail Car Burns; Some Mail Lost

The Herald was able to confirm this week that the car of a rural mail carrier out of the Ava Post Office caught fire and burned last week, and some mail was destroyed.

Postmaster Kellie Stafford was not available for comment about the incident this week and the employee we spoke with said she was not authorized to make an official statement.

Delbert Murray, chief of the Ava Rural Fire Department, said he knew nothing of the incident, however, we were told that a fire department did respond.

Patrons on Rural Route 2 northeast of Ava received pieces of charred mail packaged together last week, which prompted the Herald to ask about the incident. To date, the United States Postal Service has released no statement about damaged or destroyed mail or packages.
