Lady Bears Beat Mtn. Grove Here; Begin District Play on Saturday

The Ava Lady Bears picked up a big SCA win over Mtn. Grove here Monday night, 47-30.

Senior Jacey Swofford led Ava with 14 points, as seven different players contributed to the tally.

Mtn. Grove’s Kacey Watson led all scorers with 22 points.

Ava jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and led 25-14 at the half.

Mtn. Grove made a move on the Lady Bears in the third quarter, cutting the lead to three, and Ava held a 32-26 lead after three periods of play but outscored the Lady Panthers 15-4 in the final period to win by 17.

Scoring for Ava besides Swofford were Ashton Bewley 10, Kiaunna Snow 8, Hope Evans 6, Lauren Mendel 4, Kaylee Evans 3, and Bailey Loge 2.

Ava’s junior varsity played two quarters against Mtn. Grove and won 21-12.

Kaylee Evans led Ava with 8 points, Hailey Pedersen had 6, Mendel 5 and Araina Evans 2.

The Lady Bears will host Willow Springs in SCA action here tonight (Thursday) and will begin district play at Mtn. Grove on Saturday.

The game here tonight will feature the senior players who will be recognized in Senior Night ceremonies.

The Ava girls are seeded  sixth in the Class 3, District 10 tournament and will play Mtn. View-Liberty in first-round action at 5:30 Saturday.

Houston is the district top seed with Willow Springs ranked second. Liberty is the No. 3 seed, followed by Licking, Forsyth, Ava, Hollister and Mtn. Grove.

District semifinals will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 24, with the championship game at 5 o’clock on Saturday, Feb. 27.
